Location: Mariatorget, Stockholm
Status: Competition entry, winning proposal, ongoing project
Type: Public building, renovation
Building Start: 2018
Motivation of the jury:
The proposal “Two squares” handles connections to the city, entry situation, internal organization and room perception in a very convincing manner. The task of communicating an impression of welcoming inclusion is successfully solved, both externally and internally. The internal qualities of the building are highlighted and strengthened, as is the open accessible square in the southwestern corner of Mariatorget.
The proposal shows competence and responsiveness to the city and to the existing building.
With the motto “Two squares”, we want to highlight the two, new, open and flexible squares that we propose for the new organization of St Paul. The exterior entrance square becomes a meeting place where the vibrant diversity of the city meets the activities of Stockholms Stadsmission and the new intimate main entrance. The new interior square transforms the former church room into a collective hub around which new spaces and workplaces are grouped. The proposal is a response to the formulated vision of establishing “an internal and external meeting place that promotes social commitment, activism and spirituality”. With maximum utilization of existing physical conditions and small additions the scheme optimize the church to host the Stockholms Stadsmission’s many different activities.
